BIG FALLS, FOREST FALLS, Calif (about 1 hr. drive south of Big Bear Lake) – On Friday, February 26, about 2:45 in the afternoon, Angela Schneider (age 19 of Rancho Cucamonga) was hiking in the Big Falls area when she fell about 30 feet and suffered serious injuries. San Bernardino County Fire and USFS personnel responded after a 911 call.
Schneider was in the canyon at the 6000 foot level near the falls in very steep and rocky terrain. Ground crews were unable to carry her out of the area and requested the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Rescue Helicopter for a hoist rescue.
The helicopter with a flight and rescue medic doctor responded into the narrow canyon near the falls. The medic doctor and a stokes rescue litter was lowered 137 feet into the canyon where Schneider received medical aid for her injuries. She was then placed into the litter and was hoisted into the helicopter where she was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment.
