Arrest for Possession of Pellet Guns on School Grounds

May 13, 2016

NEEDLES, Calif – On Tuesday, May 10, at about 2:45 p.m., deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, Colorado River Station in Needles, responded to the Needles High School during school hours to investigate reports of two adults with firearms near the school football and baseball fields. When confronted by school employees both subjects fled north into the desert away from the school. At this time there were students walking in the area and participating in baseball practice on the nearby field.

With help from school officials, the deputies located and detained Jesse Rapp (age 23) and Jose Barajas (age 26), both of Needles, near the school property with three BB rifles and two pellet handguns which closely resembled real firearms. The pellet handguns were located in holsters on their waistband. Both suspects stated they were on school property to shoot squirrels and rabbits near the fields.

Both Rapp and Barajas were arrested and released with a notice to appear in court. The weapons were collected as evidence pending court proceedings.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
