Arrests for Loaded Assault Weapon in a Vehicle

WINTERHAVEN, Calif – On Tuesday, July 19, at approximately 1:30 AM, United States Border Patrol Agents near the Grays Well area and I‑8 observed a man pull out a scoped assault type rifle from the trunk of his vehicle. He then placed the weapon in the interior of the vehicle which was occupied by two other persons.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center was contacted and Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the I-8 Grays Wells area. The subjects were detained and an investigation was conducted.

An illegal, loaded assault rifle and a handgun were located in the interior of the vehicle. Several high capacity magazines including two loaded one hundred round drum magazines and several hundred rounds were located in the trunk of the vehicle.

The three occupants were travelling from the state of Utah. Brian Elliot Mitchell (age 25) was arrested for being in possession of an assault weapon and high capacity magazines and having a loaded weapon in the vehicle. His bail is set at $15,000. Kami Jean Heyes (age 32) was arrested for allowing a loaded weapon in the vehicle. Heye’s bail was set at $ 2,500. The third person was released at the scene.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
