Boat Just Purchased Fire Injures Family

March 21, 2016

BLYTHE, Calif On Friday, March 18, at about 4:45 in the afternoon, the Blythe Police Department received a 911 call that a boat was on fire in the Quechan Marina. Additionally, the caller reported two passengers of the boat had been injured.

When Officers arrived they located a local couple and their two year old child on the shoreline. The 1978 jet boat that the couple had just purchased hours before was fully engulfed in flames. The two-year-old child had suffered non-life threatening burns to her lower extremities, while her mother suffered burns to her hands.

The Blythe Fire Department responded and requested a helicopter to transport the child to a burn center. Firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames but by then the boat had drifted to the center of the marina and out of reach of fire hoses. The fire eventually burned through the hull and sank.

The Blythe Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
