Drinking Water Flows Into the Street

BLYTHE, Calif – On Wednesday evening, May 25 water was released into the street from water reservoir tanks. At the time, crews were cleaning the reservoir tank located at the intersection of Commercial Street and Murphy Street. While removing sediments from the bottom of the tank, the flow of sediments was more than the capacity of the containment area could handle and the Water Department was forced to flush the sediments into the street.

Public Works had intended to drain the water into the City’s Storm drain, but there was too much flow for the storm drain to handle and some of the water drained into the street. The City sent the street sweeper to clean the street the next morning.

The release was only potable water which carried some minerals and sand.

The City of Blythe Public Works Department was performing routine maintenance of the City’s water tanks through cleaning and inspection. Tank inspections performed during the month of December of 2015 identified sediments at the bottom of the tanks. These sediments are minerals such as iron and manganese. Due to a sedimentation process, these minerals stay at the bottom of the reservoir and are not part of the drinking water that goes into the distribution system.

The treatment of drinking water involves the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce water that is pure enough for human consumption without any short term or long term risk of any adverse health effect. The maximum contaminant level (MCL) allowed in drinking water is established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB). At the highest contaminant levels, iron and manganese are mineral substances considered under the category of Secondary Drinking Water Standards (SDWR) that affect the taste, odor, or appearance of the drinking water and do not affect health.

The water treatment process utilized by the City of Blythe complies with all state and federal requirements for the treatment of drinking water. The annual Consumer Confidence Report is sent to each resident with the water bill in June, as required by the SWRCB to inform residents of the quality of water produce in the system.
