Escapee into Mexico Returned to US Custody

MEXICALI, Baja, Mexico – On Monday, January 11, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Investigators located 30 year old Gilberto Acuña in Mexicali with the assistance of Agents from the PGJBC (Procuraduria General de Justicia del Estado de Baja California) Ministerio Publico. Gilberto Acuña escaped from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Minimum Security facility on June 12, 2015.

The six month investigation that led to the recapture of Gilberto Acuña was conducted in collaboration with members of the United States Marshals Service, United States Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau Investigations. Gilberto Acuña was detained by Mexican authorities in Mexicali on January 11, 2016 at about 6:00 p.m. and turned over to the custody of Imperial County Sheriff’s Investigators on January 12, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. Gilberto Acuña was booked into the Imperial County Jail and is being held with no bail.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
