April 18, 2016

BLYTHE, Calif – On Tuesday, April 12, the Blythe City Council approved a three year contract naming Jeff Wade the new Chief of Police for the Blythe Police Department. Wade had been acting as Interim Chief since Bob Mathews’ retirement on March 24th of this year.

Chief Wade started at the Blythe Police Department as an Explorer Scout when he was 17 years old. Wade attended the Riverside County Sheriffs 97th Police Academy when he turned 21 and was hired as a police officer on April 20, 1985. Wade has held various assignments and worked his way through all ranks during his 31 years. Wade has been married for over 27 years and has one son and a five year old grandson. His wife Christy is the Communications Supervisor for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in Blythe.

“I’m very proud of the fact that I am the first Chief of Police born and raised in Blythe. My family came to the Palo Verde Valley in 1943, my parents, siblings, and many extended family still live here. I have a deep love for this community and care about the safety of its citizens,” stated Wade.

Wade stated that one of his priorities is hiring police officers. “We are currently down four officers, but we have two in the background process.” Wade added the police department is currently testing locally and will be sending a recruit to the police academy in the fall. “The problem of hiring police officers is not a local issue, it’s nationwide.” Wade believes there is less interest in being a police officer given the increased violence towards law enforcement in the recent past.

Chief Wade plans on implementing informal “Chat with the Chief” meetings at various locations in the coming months. Wade said he was “looking forward to meeting with folks, listening to their concerns and providing the best customer service possible.”
