Mourning in America

Like many Americans, I woke up to Donald Trump being named President of the US of A. My first reaction was to pull the covers over my head and wake up in a different world. Was the election truly "rigged" as Trump spouted frequently? Did the Russians hack into electoral computers? No, despite a long-felt fear, the electoral counters are not hooked up to teh net and would have to be breached one by one. What is scarier is a Trump Presidency whose companies to business with Russia. There is a lot of "leverage" when the president of the company you are dealing with is also the President of his country.

How did he win? How did Hitler win? They both told the people the words they wanted to hear.

His speech resounded with racism, sexism as well as attacks on Muslims and Jews. He had overwhelming support of the White Supremacists, the KKK and the American Nazi Party. He was so rancid that members of his own party disengaged themselves from him.

This will be the hugest challenge yet to our constitution with its system of checks and balances. That we will have a Republican Senate and House as well as a conservative Supreme Court will not help matters.

I can remember a film I showed during a Social Studies class entitled "It can't happen here.

Yes, it can.
