Personal Watercraft Explosion

May 9, 2016

HAVASU LAKE, Calif – On Saturday, May 7, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Marine Enforcement Unit Deputies from the Riverside Sheriff, Colorado River Station witnessed a vessel explode at the Havasu Landing Resort. Deputies and an off duty Police Officer who was also a medic immediately rendered aid to the victims.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Marine Enforcement Unit also responded and extinguished the fire burning from the wreckage and aided in the rescue.

The victims, Brian Teeter and Kim Elliott (both of Lake Havasu City, Arizona) had launched their Personal Watercraft (PWC) from Body Beach on Lake Havasu and had arrived at the Havasu Landing Marina around 3:00 p.m. As the couple was departing the marina, Elliott boarded the PWC first to steady it as Teeter boarded. At the same time he attempted to start the PWC there was a large explosion originating from the engine compartment. The explosion sent both passengers airborne coming to rest on "A" dock next to the now severely damaged PWC.

Both passengers suffered major injuries with Brian Teeter flown to Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center by Care Flight and Kim Elliott transported by water to Windsor State Park and then to Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center.

Investigation determined that a fuel leak led to the explosion.
