Helicopter Rescue of Injured Hiker Near Mt Baldy

MOUNT BALDY, Calif On Friday, September 16, at approximately 5:10 p.m., a San Bernardino County Sheriff patrol helicopter was dispatched to an injured hiker on in the San Antonio Canyon area of Mt Baldy. The hiker, later identified as James Hurlbut (age 40 of Santa Ana), was hiking down from Mt Baldy and fell, sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

The helicopter responded to the area to search for Hurlbut and located him however it did not have rescue capability. A helicopter with rescue capability was called in that included volunteer medics and a hoist rescue. It arrived on scene and hoisted down the medic contacted Hurlbut. The medic determined Hurlbut needed to be hoisted into a special rescue suit/harness. Hurlbut was then hoisted back into the helicopter followed by the medic and flown in stable condition to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
