Woman Seriously Injured in Assault – Arrest Made

NEEDLES, Calif – This morning, Wednesday, June 1, at approximately 7:55 a.m., deputies from the Colorado River Station/Needles Police responded to the report of an assault that had occurred at J. Street and 3rd Street in the city of Needles. Upon arrival, deputies were advised that the victim, 18 year old female, was walking on J Street to attend the High School graduation practice. She was approached by the suspect, Andrew Kozar. Kozar without provocation struck the victim with a closed fist in the face.

The force of the impact caused the victim to fall backwards onto the sidewalk striking her head on the concrete. The victim sustained a laceration to the back of her head and injuries to her mouth and face. The attack was observed by passing motorists who stopped to render aid to the victim and detain Kozar for responding deputies. The victim was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

Deputies do not believe that the victim and the suspect where known to each other prior to the assault occurring. Andrew John Kozar (age 49 a transient of Needles) was arrested for P.C. 243(d) Battery with Serious Bodily Injury and booked into the Needles jail. The motive for the assault is unknown at this time.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
