33 neglected animals

June 4, 2017

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif – On Friday, June 2, five minutes after midnight deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff - Station: Morongo Basin responded to the 75100 Block of Mayfair Drive in Twentynine Palms for a welfare check on a juvenile reported to be living at that location.

When deputies arrived they talked to a man who said that a child lived at the house. In checking around, deputies found approximately 25 dogs, a pig, a rooster and approximately half a dozen reptiles in and around the residence.

Twentynine Palms Animal Control responded and determined that the animals were not properly cared for and were being neglected. Animal Control seized the animals and took them to their shelter.

The owner of the residence, Brookes Smith (age 38 of Twentynine Palms), was not present and unable to be contacted at the time of the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Morongo Basin Station at (760)366-4175.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
