Fatal Traffic Collision on East Hobsonway


January 12, 2017 Update

BLYTHE, Calif – On Wed, January 11, the Blythe Police Department released the identity of the man killed on East Hobsonway during the early morning roll-over last Sunday, Jan. 8. The 42 year old man was identified as Antonio “Tony” Rojas of Blythe. The driver of the vehicle Rocio Perez, also known as Rocio Rangel, remains in a desert hospital in stable condition. Police expect to send the case to the District Attorney by weeks end requesting charges against Rangel, which include felony driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

On Sunday, January 8 at about 6:45 a.m. the Blythe Police Department received a call from the California Highway Patrol dispatch that they had received a 911 call regarding a woman yelling for help on Hobsonway near the California Port of Entry.

CHP Officers responded and found the woman and learned she had been the driver of a vehicle involved in a traffic collision. CHP also located a deceased male passenger that had been ejected from the vehicle.

Blythe Police responded to the scene and took over the investigation. The woman was identified as Rocio Perez (are 37 of Blythe) and was treated by Blythe Fire Department and AMR Ambulance at the scene. It was determined that she had sustained moderate injuries and needed to be air lifted to a trauma center. A Careflight helicopter landed at the scene and transported Perez to a hospital in the Coachella Valley.

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased male pending notification of family. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, however alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
