Firefighter rescued by sheriff’s helicopter in heat-related emergency

July 12, 2017

LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif – On Sunday, July 9 between 4:56 p.m. and 6:10 p.m., firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service and San Bernardino County were working a fire north of Lake Arrowhead and south of the Deep Creek Hot Springs. During the incident, one of the fire-fighters from the Forest Service suffered a heat-related emergency and needed immediate medical care.

The victim was stabilized by fellow firefighters who were also working the fire. Due to the victim's condition and the remote location, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s air rescue helicopter was requested.

The helicopter responded and coordinated with fire personnel and inserted Air Medics on a steep hillside near the victim. After hiking to the victim, the medics assessed him and determined he needed to be hoisted out. The crew of the helicopter hoisted the victim from the scene and transported him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for further treatment.
