Helicopter rescue of hiker with diabetic emergency

July 12, 2017

HESPERIA, Calif On Thursday, July 6 at about 9:19 in the evening, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's helicopter (40King3) responded to the Deep Creek Hot Springs area after getting a call about a hiker with an unknown medical emergency. The crew of the helicopter located the hiker and was able to land nearby.

The hiker was identified the hiker as Scott Erickson (age 55 of Maryland). The deputy determined Erickson was ill from a diabetic emergency.

The crew determined the quickest way to get Erickson out of the area would have been to conduct a hoist rescue. A second San Bernardino County Sheriff's helicopter (40King1) responded to assist with the hoist rescue. The crews combined and placed a rescue harness on Erickson. He was then hoisted up to the helicopter and flown to a waiting ambulance.
