Hiker falls to his death in the Devil's Backbone area of Mt. Baldy

March 14, 2017

MOUNT BALDY, Calif On Saturday, March 11 at 10:48 a.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation was advised by Fire Dispatch of two men who had fallen while hiking the Devil's Backbone in the Mount Baldy area. The crew of Helicopter Air Rescue 307 quickly responded to the area and located the victims approximately 300 feet down from the trail in very steep rocky terrain.

Due to the inaccessible terrain the crew determined a hoist rescue would be required for each of the men. After lowering medical personnel, one of the men, Lloyd Charton (age 69) was found to be deceased, while Trevor Anthes (age 42 of Bishop) was found to have serious non-life threatening injuries sustained while trying to provide aid to Charton.

Anthes was placed in a rescue harness, hoisted up to the helicopter and transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. The crew later returned and recovered the deceased Charton and transported him to the Coroner.
