MOUNT BALDY, Calif – On Tuesday, February 7 at 3:08 p.m. San Bernardino County Sheriff - Fontana Station deputies received a call about a person who went hiking on Saturday, February 4 and had not returned.
A sheriff’s deputy responded to Mt. Baldy and located Yucheng Jia’s vehicle parked near Manker Flats. As a result, a sheriff’s “Hasty Team” from West Valley Search and Rescue was activated Tuesday evening. The team walked the trail near Manker Flats. A large scale search was planned for the next day, Wednesday, the 8th, and a command post was established at Mt. Baldy Fire Station.
On Wednesday, February 8 approximately 20 search and rescue personnel and Sheriff’s Aviation responded and began searching in the morning. At about 9:30 a.m. the helicopter crew observed a body in the area of Devil’s Backbone. A short time later they determined it was a deceased adult male.
A rescue helicopter was needed to hoist the victim from the location. Due to dangerous conditions, the recovery was completed on Thursday, February 9 when the victim was transported to the Coroner’s office.
On February 9, Coroner officials positively identified the victim as Yucheng Jia (age 26 of Torrance) and made notification to the family. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. No additional information is available at this time.
