June 20, 2017

LANDERS, Calif – On Saturday, June 17, at about 1:05 p.m., deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department - Morongo Basin Station, responded to the 2800 block of Shawnee Trail in Landers, after getting a report of a missing female. Rhea Mears (age 64 of Landers) was last seen riding a quad in the area.

Deputies arrived on scene and followed the vehicle tracks, westbound from her last reported location. With the quick work of the deputies, and the assistance from Sheriff’s Aviation, deputies located Mears, crashed in the desert. She was approximately a quarter mile east of Highway 247 and 1.5 miles north of Happy Trail.

Mears was breathing, but had major injuries. Deputies immediately began CPR, and continued until the San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived to assist. Sheriff’s Aviation flew Mears to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment, but unfortunately she later died from her injuries.

The California Highway Patrol responded for the vehicle accident investigation. Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Morongo Basin Station at (760)366-4175.
