18-year-old dies after car goes into canal

BLYTHE, Calif – On Tuesday, May 1 at about 11:28 in the morning, the Blythe Police Department received a 911 call reporting a traffic collision near Defrain Blvd. and 8th Avenue. The caller stated a car had gone in the canal. It was also reported that witnesses were able to get the driver out of the water, but he was unresponsive.
Blythe Police, along with AMR and Blythe Fire Department responded.
The first Officers on scene discovered witnesses performing CPR on the male driver. AMR arrived and transported the male to Palo Verde Hospital.
Ehrenberg Fire Department also responded with their Dive Team to search for additional victims, but none were found.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Palo Verde Hospital. The driver was identified as 18-year-old Alec Chavez of Blythe.
Defrain Blvd. was closed for over three hours as Blythe Police investigated to determine the cause of the accident.
At this time the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Police are asking that anyone who might have been in the area of 8th Avenue and Defrain and witnessed the accident to please call Detective Sean Burt.
