Guatemalan detainee gives birth

October 26, 2018

YUMA, Arizona – Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents assisted a pregnant Guatemalan national who later delivered her baby. Sunday night, October 21, in the Yuma Central Processing Center, a Guatemalan national detainee approached agents and stated that she was pregnant and feeling ill. Agents immediately notified Yuma Regional Medical Center and transported the woman there for further medical care.

Monday morning, the Guatemalan woman gave birth to a healthy male child. Both will be under medical observation for the next 36 hours. By law, the child is a U.S. citizen due to the fact that he was born on U.S. soil.

The Guatemalan woman is just one of more than 1,900 Guatemalan nationals apprehended by the Yuma Sector Border Patrol since October 1 of this year – more than a 175 percent increase from the same time last year.

An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Federal law allows agents to charge individuals by complaint, a method that allows the filing of charges for criminal activity without inferring guilt.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials welcome assistance from the community. Individuals can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. Reporting illicit activity could result in saving someone’s life.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP’s mission includes keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. Follow us on Twitter @CBPArizona.
