Salton Sea: North Lake Vision

MANUEL PEREZ, 4th District Supervisor

SALTON SEA, Calif – Earlier in January, I launched an exciting vision for the Salton Sea to protect the northern portion and create a jewel for our environment and an economic engine for the eastern Coachella Valley and Riverside County.

The proposal is a two-pronged approach to protect the northern end of the Salton Sea and create a significant environmental, recreation and economic development resource. The construction would include an in-sea barrier to preserve Riverside County’s shoreline and create a healthy body of water for environmental habitat and recreational use.

The second component is a restored and expanded “Whitewater River.” A study was also released by the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), showing that the economic benefits of restoring the Salton Sea far exceed the costs, and our valley can reap upwards of $13 billion in economic benefits.
