MOUNT BALDY, Calif – On January 5, at about 1:00 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call from Reina Perez (age 40 of Pomona) stuck on top of the San Antonio Waterfalls. A Sheriff’s deputy and West Valley SAR members responded to the location and requested Sheriff’s Aviation respond due to rocky terrain, drop offs, and diminishing lighting conditions.
Helicopter 40K6 responded to the location and determined a hoist rescue would be necessary. Another helicopter, AR306 responded to the location and was positioned over the “ledged out” hiker. A rescuer was lowered about 90’ to Perez where a technical pick off rescue was conducted. Both rescuer and Perez were hoisted back into the helicopter and transported to Cow Canyon Saddle to waiting SAR personnel.
Perez had been stranded for about three hours before her rescue and was not able to move from the ledge. Perez was not injured while hiking or during the rescue.
