March 2, 2018

MECCA, Calif On Sunday, February 25 at about 9:40 p.m., John Berryhill (age 74) and Caron Berryhill (age 53) were hiking in the Mecca Hills along the Ladder Canyon Trail located in Riverside County. The two ended up going off trail and became disoriented. They realized they were lost and called the Riverside County Sheriff's Department for help just before sunset.

The Riverside Sheriff's Department deployed ground search and rescue teams to locate the hikers and requested assistance from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Aviation Unit.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's desert patrol helicopter (40K1) responded from Apple Valley with a crew of pilot and tactical flight officer. The crew flew to the latitude and longitude from the hiker's 911 call.

Upon arrival, the crew of the 40K1 helicopter quickly located the hikers standing with Riverside County search and rescue team members. The crew of the helicopter were able to land nearby and loaded Caron and a rescuer in the helicopter. The two were flown to the command post and left with Riverside County Sheriff's personnel. The crew of 40K1 returned to the scene, picked up John and the remaining search and rescue team member and flew them to the command post.
