Sheriff’s deputies chase stolen ATV to make arrest

NEEDLES, Calif – On Sunday, January 07 at about 8:27 a.m., a deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff - Colorado River Station was on patrol in the area of Needles Highway and North K. Street when he observed a male riding a quad. The driver, later identified as William Powell (age 35 of Needles), accelerated south on North K. Street towards Front Street.

Another deputy, who was on a vehicle check at Front Street and South K., went to assist the first deputy. Powell tried to elude deputies by driving west along the railroad tracks; however, he became stuck.

After a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody without incident. The quad Powell was driving had been report stolen out of Victorville. Powell was also found in possession of a controlled substance. Powell was transported to the Colorado River Station jail for booking and is being held on $50,000 bail, pending a court hearing.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
