Bicyclist Killed in Traffic Collision

BLYTHE, Calif On Friday March 15, at 6:22 in the evening, Blythe Police responded to the 2200 block of West Hobsonway, regarding to a traffic collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist. When Officers arrived, they found the rider of the bicycle being tended to by agents from the US Border Patrol who had happened upon the collision scene shortly after it occurred. Units from Blythe City Fire and River Medical responded to the scene, and began treatment, however; they were unable to revive the bicyclist identified as Alvin Aguirre, age 49, of Blythe. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported that Aguirre had been riding his bicycle west bound while towing a small bike trailer. Witnesses reported seeing Aguirre weaving within the west bound lane just prior to the collision.

A 2012 Nissan Sentra, driven by Ramon Torres, age 26, of Blythe and two passengers was approaching west bound behind Aguirre. After waiting for an east bound vehicle to pass, Torres attempted to pass Aguirre. Witnesses reported that Aguirre inexplicitly turned to his left and into the path of the passing vehicle, where he was struck.

Torres was evaluated at the scene, and showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Police confirm that Torres submitted samples for chemical testing. One of the passengers in the Nissan received a minor injury from broken glass, but neither Torres nor his passengers required medical treatment.

West Hobsonway from West Florence Blvd. to East Florence Blvd. remained closed until midnight while the scene was processed and evidence collected.

This case remains under investigation.
