Man Drowns in Boating Accident on Lake Havasu

September 27, 2016

LAKE HAVASU, Calif – On Saturday, September 24, at about 4:30 p.m., Steven Cornejo (age 29 of South Gate) was boating in the area of Red Rock Cove on Lake Havasu with friends when he jumped into the water to retrieve a hat that blew out of their rented pontoon boat. At the time, winds were blowing at about 25 mph.

The boat was drifting with the wind and Cornejo could not make it back to the boat. Attempts were made by others passengers on the boat to assist Cornejo but he was not able to remain on the surface.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Marine Enforcement Unit responded to the area to assist. Shortly after their arrival members of the Department's Dive Rescue were requested. Two divers arrived and immediately conducted a hasty rescue dive in an attempt to locate the victim. The rescue effort was suspended at dusk.

On September 25, at about 7:00 a.m., the search effort resumed. The Dive Rescue Team was assisted by the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. Sonar operations located the victim at a depth of about 50 feet. At 5:21 p.m. divers brought the victim to the surface. The victim was turned over to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Coroner's Division.
