Officer Involved Shooting

INDIO, Calif – On Saturday, August 20, at about 9:15 PM, officers from the Indio Police Department responded to the 44500 block of Jackson Street, when a man armed with a knife was threatening people in the area. Officers located the man, and during the contact, an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was transported to a local area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The dead man’s identity will be withheld pending notification of next of kin. No Indio Police Officers or others were injured during the incident.

The Indio Police Department requested the Riverside County Sheriff's Department assume the investigation into this incident. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department's Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene. This is an on-going investigation and no further details will be released at this time.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per his Department policy. The involved officer's name will not be released at this time. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Central Homicide Investigator Alfaro at (760) 393-3528.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
