Pedestrian Hit by Car & Dies

March 21, 2016

BLYTHE, Calif – On Friday, March 18, at about 11:50 p.m., the Blythe Police Department received a 911 call reporting a vehicle hitting a pedestrian on Hobsonway just west of Olive Lake Blvd. When Officers arrived they found the female pedestrian had already died from injuries sustained from being hit by a vehicle.

Officers located the driver of the vehicle, 29 year old Hugh Thomas Brown III, from Tucson, Arizona. Brown remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Brown told Police that he had been driving eastbound on Hobsonway when he struck the female pedestrian who was pushing a shopping cart in the middle of the roadway.

Evidence at the scene, as well as statements from passengers in a vehicle travelling the opposite direction supported Browns’ version of events. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

The deceased pedestrian was identified as 64 year old Diane Maestas. Diane was a homeless female who had been in the Blythe area for over 20 years. She had stayed primarily in the area of the I-10 Bridge over the Colorado River. Diane’s family was notified of her death on Saturday.

Anyone with information regarding this case, or any other crime, is urged to contact Blythe Police Department at 922-6111, or they can give their information anonymously by calling Crime Stop at 921-CARE (2273) or by E-Mail.
