Possible Explosive Device Found in Vehicle Determined to be Non-Explosive

NEEDLES, Calif – On Friday, November 4, at approximately 1:10 in the morning, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff - Colorado River Station on proactive patrol contacted Ricky Berry and Kaitlen Barber near a vehicle at the Chevron Gas Station at 2321 W. Needles Hwy. Kaitlen Barber displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance and a search of the vehicle revealed drug paraphernalia.

She was also found to have $45,000 in out of county arrest warrants for false information to a peace officer and drug charges. Also located inside the vehicle were metal knuckles believed to belong to Ricky Berry, and an apparatus having the appearance of an explosive device.

For the safety of those nearby, the area was cordoned off and detectives from the Sheriff’s Arson-Bomb Detail responded. The device was removed from the vehicle by a bomb robot and rendered safe by a controlled detonation. After the device was rendered safe it was found to be a facsimile device that was non explosive.

Kaitlen Barber (age 21 of Eugene, Oregon) was charged with HS 11550(a) - Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance; and, HS 11364(a) - Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She was transported and booked at the Needles jail with bail set at $45,000.

Ricky Berry (age 56 of Eugene, Oregon) was charged with PC 21810 - Possession of Metal Knuckles. He was transported and booked at the Needles jail with bail set at $25,000.
