Night Vision Helicopter Hoist Rescue at Aztec Falls

June 29, 2016

LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif On Tuesday, June 28 at 12:30 AM Wyatt Zink (age 19 of Lancaster) was with friends at Aztec Falls in the Deep Creek area when he fell approximately 75 feet on a steep, rocky slope. Zink suffered life threatening injuries.

Due to the remote location and terrain involved, San Bernardino County Fire personnel requested San Bernardino County Sheriff's helicopter 40King5 to conduct a Night Vision Goggle hoist rescue of Zink.

Pilot Deputy Jim Landry, Hoist Operator Deputy Edward Leon, and Air Medic Matt Perkins responded to the location. As Landry held the helicopter in a hover over the scene, Leon lowered Perkins down approximately 110 feet to the victim. After assessing his injuries, Perkins packaged Zink in a Bauman Bag and Leon hoisted Zink back to the helicopter. Zink was then flown to Mountain Community Hospital for treatment.

40King5 helicopter then returned to Aztec Falls and hoisted Air Medic Matt Perkins back into the aircraft.
