May 17, 2018

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif – On Sunday, May 13 at 12:10 a.m., a San Bernardino County Sheriff deputy conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a Dodge Ram truck with a stolen license plate. During the stop, the truck took off at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the vehicle failed to yield, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit lasted about six minutes and the suspect and passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Desert Heights and Mesa Drive in the unincorporated area of 29 Palms. Deputies searched the area with the assistance of officers from the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, Anthony Aguirre (age 33 of Riverside), was located hiding in a dirt field. The passenger, Kassy Thayer (age 34 of Temecula), was found hiding in an unlocked vehicle in the neighborhood. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

Investigation revealed the truck was stolen from the Victorville area on Sunday, April 22, 2018. The license plate on the vehicle had been stolen off of another truck of a similar make.

Aguirre was found to have several active warrants for his arrest for traffic related offenses out of Los Angeles County. Aguirre was arrested and booked at the Morongo Basin Jail for Possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading. Aguirre is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Thayer was arrested for misdemeanor resisting or obstructing and later released on a citation.
