Agents rescue 3 illegal aliens

September 20, 2018

YUMA, Arizona Border Patrol agents from the Yuma and Wellton Stations retrieved three illegal aliens during two weekend rescues. In the first event on Saturday, Sept 15 at about 10:00 a.m., Wellton Station agents learned that two men from Mexico had called for help on a cell phone and lit a signal fire after they ran out of water.

Agents located the men south of Interstate 8, near Wellton. After determining that neither of the men required medical attention, agents arrested them for immigration violations.

On Sunday, at about 11:15 p.m., Yuma Station agents assigned to the Marine Patrol Unit saw a man struggling to stay afloat in the Colorado River near County 7th Street and used a rescue bag to pull him to safety. The man, an illegal alien from Mexico, was assessed for injuries and transported to Yuma Station for further processing.

Yuma Sector agents are specifically trained to provide humanitarian assistance to individuals they encounter in distress while conducting their border security mission. All agents are trained as first responders, and many have advanced training and specialized equipment to perform water rescues and treat heat-related illnesses.

An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

All persons, drugs and vehicles are processed per Yuma Sector guidelines. Federal law allows agents to charge individuals by complaint, a method that allows the filing of charges for criminal activity without inferring guilt.

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents effectively combat smuggling organizations attempting to illegally transport people and contraband through southwestern Arizona and California. Citizens can help the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection by calling 1-866-999-8727 toll-free to report suspicious activity. Callers can remain anonymous.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP strives to keep terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
