Deputy involved shooting

MECCA, Calif – On Sunday, June 3 at about 3:27a.m., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff - Thermal Station were dispatched to the area of Lincoln Street and 66th Avenue, in the unincorporated area or Riverside County known as Mecca. Deputies responded to assist the California Highway Patrol and CAL FIRE with a non-compliant suspect armed with an axe, and a deputy involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. There are no other outstanding suspects and no other threat to the community. The suspect’s name will not be released at this time, pending the ongoing investigation.

There were no injuries sustained by law enforcement personnel.

The Deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per department policy and the deputy’s name will not be released at this time.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department's Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. As this is an active investigation, no additional details are available at this time.
