Man turns himself in concerning 2012 shooting death

August 1, 2018

BLYTHE, Calif – On December 1, 2012 the Blythe Police Department investigated the shooting death of Terrance Hughes, who at the time was only 24 years old. Hughes was shot near the corner of Palm Drive and Barnard at about 4:45 p.m. just as the annual Christmas parade was about to begin.

Blythe Police Detectives eventually identified a then 24-year-old Blythe resident named Jorge Ernesto Cazares Jr. as the suspect. Police later learned that Cazares fled to Mexico in the hours after the murder.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s office filed homicide charges against Cazares on January 16, 2015 and issued a warrant for his arrest.

On Sunday, July 29, 2018, at about 3:00 a.m. Cazares entered the United States and turned himself in to the Calexico Police Department. Cazares was booked into the Imperial County Jail on the homicide warrant.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Jail Transportation unit picked Cazares up on Monday morning and transported him to the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta where he will await arraignment.

Blythe Police Lt. Joshua Coe drove to Murrieta on July 31 where he spoke to Cazares about the case. Police are not releasing details of that interview.

Chief Jeff Wade personally contacted Terrance Hughes’ mother at her home and notified her of Cazares’ arrest. When asked about the mothers’ response Chief Wade said “I think there was a little sense of relief. She told me that she hoped Terrance could finally rest in peace.”

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
