Riverside County – We could all lose a little

December 21, 2018

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif – An individual's Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing his or her weight in kilograms by his or her squared height in meters. While it is not a true diagnostic tool for determining the body fatness or health of an individual, health care providers use BMI as a screening tool for determining an overall weight category for a patient. BMI is often used to identify overweight and obesity in a population. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) classifies a BMI of 18.5 - 24.9 as "Normal or Healthy Weight" and a BMI of 30.0 and above as "Obese."

In 2014, the World Health Organization ranked the average BMI of over 200 countries. The United States had the 17th-highest average BMI ranking: Only 16 other participating countries had a higher average BMI than the United States. The CDC has reported that nearly 40-percent of the total US population, just over 93 million people, is classified as "obese" according to 2015-16 data.

With a population of almost 2.2 million residents, Riverside County, California is the 4th-most populous county in the state and the 11th-most populous county in the country. According to’s data, the average Body Mass Index (BMI) in Riverside County is 31.1 for men and 31.0 for women. This equates to an average weight of 214 pounds for men and 183 pounds for women.

The average person in Riverside County would need to lose 53 pounds to lower his or her BMI to the "Normal or Healthy Weight" BMI weight status category. In comparison, the average Californian would need to lose 50.6 pounds (5% less) and the average American would need to lose 59 pounds (10% more) to achieve the same result.

The average age for obese men in Riverside County is 47, and the average age for obese women is 44.
