Shooting at Karma’s Calling Bar

March 2, 2018

BLYTHE, Calif – On Tuesday, February 27 at about 11:37 p.m., the Blythe Police Department received a call regarding a shooting that had just occurred at Karma’s Calling Bar at 221W. Hobsonway. When Officers arrived, they learned that a male subject inside the bar had accidentally fired a single round from a firearm located in his jacket pocket. A female inside the bar was struck in the leg by shrapnel from the bullet. The male subject exited the bar and fled the area in a bluish green Ford Expedition.

At the same time as the call for service was being dispatched a Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description, for an unrelated traffic violation. The vehicle, was determined to be the same vehicle that fled the scene of the shooting a few moments earlier. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, 38-year-old Blythe resident, Ruben Mejia was contacted and a loaded firearm was located inside the vehicle.

Mejia was arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm and driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Mejia discharged the firearm on accident, and he did not intend on shooting the victim or anyone else at the bar. Mejia was later booked into the Blythe Jail.

A female who was injured at the scene of the shooting was taken to Palo Verde Hospital. Her injuries were non-life threatening and she was released from the hospital a short time later.
