Supervisor Perez acclaims State’s approval of aid to humanitarian efforts in Blythe

April 25, 2019

BLYTHE, Calif – Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez offers the following statement on Governor Newsom’s approval this week of $521,000 for temporary shelter and resources to asylum seekers coming through Blythe from Border Patrol custody:

“Over the past month, Riverside County has linked hundreds of migrants and families of asylum seekers to services, shelter and transportation. Our response has been seamless to date, with little to no impacts on the Blythe or Coachella Valley communities. A critical reason for that is the network of nonprofit and faith-based organizations that have filled needs for temporary shelter, meals, clothing, spiritual support and other resources.

“It is great news that Governor Newsom has issued funds to Catholic Charities to address the humanitarian need. These funds support the work they are doing and certainly help going forward, should this become a long-term operation. The Riverside County Economic Development Agency has reached out to our other nonprofit partners to help them access potential funding from the state.

“Riverside County saw a responsibility and immediately stepped up to respond as a safety net and provide compassionate assistance to people in desperate situations. Our mission-driven efforts reflect who we are as a county and as a country that is a beacon of freedom and refuge.”

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez represents the eastern two-thirds of Riverside County on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Stretching from Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs, south to the Salton Sea and east to Blythe and the Colorado River, the 4th District is the largest geographical district in the county.

Supervisor Perez’s office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
