Update on Imperial County services affected by ransomware attack on computer systems

April 28, 2019

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif – The County of Imperial continues the process of restoring the County’s website and systems impacted by the ransomware attack on April 13, 2019. Information & Technical Services (ITS) officials confirm the County’s website has been restored and most departmental pages are operating without flaws.

Imperial County Auditor-Controller’s Office system has been restored allowing staff to resume processing warrants delayed from the incident. The Clerk-Recorder’s Department is also back online completing recording services.

The Imperial County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office reports they are now able to accept over-the-counter payments and obtain property tax information from their restored system. Due to the incident, some property owners may experience a delay in their payments being processed, but staff is working diligently to post and process all payments in a timely manner and plan to have any pending payments completed by early next week.

In addition, the Imperial County Assessor’s Office has resumed services for the public with some minor limitations on the retrieval and sharing of historical documents in an electronic format. Staff is also working on restoring this function.

Imperial County Executive Officer, Tony Rouhotas is optimistic the full system will be restored saying, “It has been a daunting task, but I am confident in our team’s expertise and the non-stop work they have completed to restore our system and to ensure an attack of this nature does not affect the County of Imperial again.”

County officials will continue working with local, state, and federal law enforcement in the investigation of this incident. The County appreciates the public’s patience as we continue the process of restoring our system and technical services.
