Arrest for Animal Cruelty after causing death of a 9-week-old kitten

JOSHUA TREE, Calif – On Saturday, December 14 at about 8:11 pm, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department - Morongo Basin Station, were dispatched to the 62000 block of Twentynine Palms Highway in Joshua Tree after receiving a cruelty to animals’ report from the owner of an injured kitten.

After investigation, deputies discovered an acquaintance of the owner of an injured kitten, Daniel Peter Hernandez (age 28 of Joshua Tree), assaulted her 9-week old kitten, causing significant injuries to the kitten’s face, head and neck. The injuries were so severe the kitten succumbed to its injures a short time later. Hernandez fled the scene before deputies arrived. A warrant was issued for his arrest for a violation of PC 597(A); cruelty to animals.

On Saturday, January 4 at about 2:44 am, deputies from the Morongo Basin Station, conducted a traffic stop in the Joshua Tree area during which Hernandez was contacted. Hernandez was arrested without incident and booked at West Valley Detention Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.
