Injured leg requires air rescue off mountain

July 15, 2019

MOUNT BALDY, Calif On Saturday, July 13 about 3:30 p.m., Kyle J. Chan (age 23) hiked to the summit of Mount Baldy with friends. On their way down, at the 6,100-foot level, Chan sustained a leg injury and was unable to walk. Knowing he couldn't descend any further, Chan called 911 for help.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's helicopter, 40K1, responded and located Chan in a remote and rugged area of the mountain. The crew determined a hoist rescue would need to be conducted and requested Air Rescue 306.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's Air Rescue 306 responded to the location and lowered a rescue medic down to Chan. Chan was placed in a rescue harness and hoisted into the helicopter. He was then transported nearby to waiting medical personnel.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of hiking in the local mountains. Without proper experience and preparation, this type of activity can lead to serious injury or death.
